About this Europe Flags quiz

This flag quiz of Europe tests whether you can tell the continent's flags apart, from the instantly familiar to the ones that trip up almost everyone. You get 15 flags, one per round, and four countries to choose from each time. The early rounds are flag quiz Europe easy territory, with big Western European tricolours. The later ones bring in look-alikes, Baltic stripes and Balkan emblems.

Europe is the hardest continent for flag spotting because so many flags share the same few colours. Red, white and blue appear on more than a dozen of them, and several countries use the same tricolour turned on its side. Every answer in this quiz comes with a one-line explanation that points out the detail that matters: stripe direction, shade of blue, a symbol in the corner, or an unusual shape.

The quiz suits teens and adults, geography students, travellers and anyone who wants to stop mixing up the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Play it solo to learn, or turn it into a flag quiz game with friends: everyone plays on their own phone and you compare scores at the end. Teachers can put it on a projector for a quick class challenge.

A fun fact before you start: Switzerland's flag is square, and among sovereign states only Vatican City shares that shape. Once you have finished, try our world flag quiz or the European capitals quiz to keep going.
