About this 50 States quiz

This 50 states quiz takes you on a quick tour of the United States in 15 questions. It covers size and population, state capitals, nicknames, borders, the Great Lakes, flags and the order in which states joined the Union. The first few questions are warm-ups that most people get right. The last few are proper stumpers that trip up even keen geography fans.

The quiz suits teens and adults, students preparing for a US geography or civics lesson, and anyone hosting a trivia night. Each question has four options and a short explanation, so you learn something even when you guess wrong. Your score appears as soon as you finish, and the complete list of 50 states trivia questions and answers sits further down the page for checking or revision.

A good way to use the quiz is to play once cold, read the explanations, then play again a day later to see what stuck. Teachers can project it on a screen and let teams shout out answers. Postal codes and capitals make good follow-up practice, because so many sound alike.

Fun fact: Rhode Island, the smallest state by area, has more residents than Alaska, the largest. Alaska has well under a million people spread across a space bigger than Texas, California and Montana combined.
