This republic day quiz is a quick, fair test of how well you know the story behind 26 January - from the Purna Swaraj pledge of 1930 to the Constitution coming into force in 1950. The quiz on Republic Day covers the people who shaped the Constitution, the traditions of the parade and Beating Retreat, and a few landmark dates that even history buffs mix up.

The 15 Republic Day quiz questions climb from easy warm-ups to real stumpers, so they suit school students, college groups, office teams and families. Teachers and organisers often use it for a Republic Day quiz competition: play it on a projector, or read the questions out and use the explanations to add context. The complete set of Republic Day quiz questions and answers in English is in the answer key further down the page.

One fact many people get wrong: the Constitution was adopted on 26 November 1949 (now Constitution Day), but it came into force only on 26 January 1950. The two-month wait was deliberate, so that India could become a republic on the anniversary of the Purna Swaraj declaration.
