About this Halloween quiz

This Halloween quiz digs into the spooky season's roots, from the Celtic festival of Samhain to the turnip lanterns of Ireland and Scotland, and then moves on to gothic novels, horror films and a few odd facts. There are 15 Halloween quiz questions with answers, starting with easy warm-ups and ending with harder ones that even keen fans may miss.

It suits teens and adults, office Halloween parties, school clubs and anyone who wants Halloween trivia for a costume night. Play alone for an instant score, or read the questions aloud and let teams compete. Every question comes with a short explanation, and the full answer key appears further down the page, so a host can run it as a trivia quiz without any preparation.

A fun fact to share at the party: before pumpkins, people carved faces into turnips. Irish and Scottish emigrants to North America found pumpkins larger and easier to hollow out, and the pumpkin jack-o'-lantern was born. Another: the great escape artist Harry Houdini died on Halloween night in 1926, and fans still hold seances to try to reach him. Take the quiz, check the answers, and share your score to see who is the true Halloween expert.
