This easter quiz covers the whole season, from Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday through Good Friday to Easter Sunday itself. Expect Bible questions on the Easter story, a few calendar puzzles about why the date moves every year, and some lighter Easter trivia about bunnies, buns, jewelled eggs and a remote Pacific island.
The 15 questions start easy and build to a few genuine stumpers, so it suits families, church youth groups, classrooms and adult quiz nights alike. The Bible questions follow what the Gospels say and name the Gospel where it matters, so you can look up the passage afterwards. Every answer comes with a short explanation, and the complete list of Easter quiz questions and answers is further down the page if you want to run it as a printed round.
Here is a fact that surprises most players: Western Easter can fall on any Sunday between 22 March and 25 April. The calculation traces back to the Council of Nicaea in AD 325, and because it depends on the moon, the latest possible date of 25 April turns up only rarely - 1943 was the last time, and 2038 is the next. Why does the date of Easter change every year?
Easter is tied to the moon. In the Western church it falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, so it can land anywhere from 22 March to 25 April. Orthodox churches use the older Julian calendar, which is why their Easter is often on a different Sunday.
