About this Sports Trivia quiz

These sports trivia questions and answers take you around the world in 15 questions: golf, ice hockey, cycling, boxing, cricket, basketball, swimming, bowling, sumo, tennis, rugby, athletics and even curling. No single sport dominates, so it is a fair test of all-round sporting knowledge rather than a quiz for one kind of fan.

The first few questions are friendly warm-ups, such as how many holes are in a round of golf. The middle section brings in history, like the Canadian teacher who invented basketball in the United States and the boxer once known as Cassius Clay. The last few are proper stumpers on the decathlon, the Fosbury Flop and curling terms that only true sports trivia fans tend to know.

Every answer comes with a short explanation, which makes the page useful well beyond a single play. Quizmasters can lift these sports trivia questions for a pub or office quiz, teachers can use them as a quick class starter, and friends can play one after another and compare scores. It suits teens and adults and takes about four minutes.

Fun fact: the yellow jersey worn by the Tour de France leader is yellow because the newspaper that founded the race in 1903, L'Auto, was printed on yellow paper.
