About this Harry Potter quiz

This Harry Potter quiz is for anyone who grew up waiting for the next book or rewatching the films every Christmas. The 15 questions start at Hogwarts, with the Sorting Hat, Quidditch and the three-headed dog under the trapdoor, then move on to Dementors, the Marauder's Map and the Horcruxes that held pieces of Voldemort's soul.

A few questions step outside the books: the platform sign at King's Cross, the word that made it into the Oxford English Dictionary, the title American readers got, the real sport played on broomsticks and the pen name Rowling used for her crime novels. That mix makes it good Harry Potter trivia for a fan night, a class quiz or a family round, with easy questions for casual readers and harder ones for people who know Hermione's middle name.

Every answer comes with a short explanation, so a wrong guess still teaches you something. Play on your own, then share your score and challenge friends. The full list of Harry Potter quiz questions and answers is printed lower down the page for anyone hosting a quiz.
