About this Hollywood Movie quiz

This Hollywood movie quiz is about the stories behind the films everyone has seen: the shark that kept breaking down, the roar stitched together in a sound studio, the lines people quote without knowing where they came from. There are 15 questions, and most of them can be worked out from what you half remember, even if you have never read a word of film trivia.

It suits a movie night with friends, a family quiz after dinner, or a team round at an office event. Teens who know the big franchises will hold their own, and older players get their turn with Hitchcock and the 1970s classics. Each answer comes with a short note, so the reveal is half the fun.

Hollywood has been the centre of American film since the 1910s, when studios moved west to Los Angeles for the sunshine and cheap land. The idea of the summer blockbuster arrived in 1975 with Jaws, which opened wide across the country with heavy TV advertising, and the business has chased that kind of opening weekend ever since. Many of the films here came out of that era of big, risky productions.
