This quiz spelling challenge picks 15 of the English words people misspell most often, from "receive" and "separate" to "liaison", "onomatopoeia" and "pharaoh". Each question shows four versions of a word and asks you to spot the right one, with a few twists: one question asks you to find the misspelled word, and another tests the common mix-up between "there", "their" and "they're".
It works well as a spelling quiz for adults and teenagers, since these are not children's words but the ones that still trip up students, office workers and even careful writers. The questions run from easy to hard, so a score of 12 or more out of 15 is very good.
Every answer comes with a short explanation, often a memory trick such as "a shirt has one collar and two sleeves" for necessary, or the word's origin, which explains odd letter patterns. Doubled letters cause most mistakes: accommodate, embarrass, millennium, occurrence and questionnaire all have at least one. Play this spelling quiz online once, note the words you missed, and come back a few days later to see whether the tricks have stuck.
A fun fact: "misspell" is itself a commonly misspelled word. It keeps both s's, because it is simply "mis-" added to "spell".
