Answers to the starter quiz

Spoilers! These are the Starter quiz’s answers. Easy, Medium, Hard and Mixed rounds show their own answers when you finish.

  1. If MANGO is coded as NBOHP, how is APPLE coded?

    • BQQNF
    • BQQMF
    • ZOOKD
    • BPQMF

Answer: BQQMF. Each letter moves one step forward: M→N, A→B, N→O, G→H, O→P. So APPLE becomes BQQMF.

  2. If FISH is coded as URHS, how is BIRD coded?

    • YRJW
    • XRIW
    • YQIW
    • YRIW

Answer: YRIW. Each letter is replaced by its opposite (positions add to 27): F–U, I–R, S–H, H–S. For BIRD: B→Y, I→R, R→I, D→W.

  3. If CAT = 24 (sum of letter positions), what is DOG?

    • 26
    • 25
    • 27
    • 28

    Answer: 26. C(3) + A(1) + T(20) = 24. D(4) + O(15) + G(7) = 26.

  4. In a code, TABLE is written as FMCBU. How is CHAIR written?

    • SJBIB
    • DIBJS
    • SJBID
    • RJBID

Answer: SJBID. The word is reversed and each letter moved +1: TABLE → ELBAT → FMCBU. CHAIR → RIAHC → SJBID.

  5. If 'sky' is called 'sea', 'sea' is called 'water', 'water' is called 'air' and 'air' is called 'cloud', what do we drink?

    • Air
    • Water
    • Sea
    • Cloud

Answer: Air. We drink water, and in this code water is called 'air'. Answer with the code word, not the real word.

  6. In a code, 'tik po ra' means 'red rose blooms', 'po ki tik' means 'rose is red' and 'ne po' means 'white rose'. What is the code for 'red'?

    • po
    • ki
    • ra
    • tik

Answer: tik. 'po' is common to all three sentences, as is 'rose', so rose = po. The first two share 'red rose' and 'tik po', so red = tik.

  7. If A = 26, B = 25, ..., Z = 1, how is LIGHT written?

    • 12-9-7-8-20
    • 15-18-20-19-7
    • 15-17-20-19-7
    • 14-18-20-19-7

    Answer: 15-18-20-19-7. In reverse numbering each letter gets 27 minus its position: L(12)→15, I(9)→18, G(7)→20, H(8)→19, T(20)→7.

  8. If ACE = 15, then what is BED?

    • 11
    • 20
    • 40
    • 45

    Answer: 40. The code is the product of positions: A(1) × C(3) × E(5) = 15 (the sum would be 9). BED = 2 × 5 × 4 = 40.

  9. If PAINT is coded 74128 and EXCEL is coded 93596, how is ACCEPT coded?

    • 455978
    • 455987
    • 545978
    • 455979

    Answer: 455978. Read the letter-digit pairs: P7, A4, I1, N2, T8, E9, X3, C5, L6. ACCEPT = A4 C5 C5 E9 P7 T8 = 455978.

  10. Each letter of GOLD is moved forward by its position in the word (1st by 1, 2nd by 2, and so on). What is the code?

    • HPOH
    • HQNH
    • IQOH
    • HQOH

    Answer: HQOH. G+1 = H, O+2 = Q, L+3 = O, D+4 = H, giving HQOH.
