Letter, Alphanumeric & Semantic Series: Notes for SSC Exams

Letter positions, gap patterns, alternating and alphanumeric series, repeating-pattern blanks and logical word order. Methods with fresh worked examples.

60-second revision

  • Convert every letter to its position (A 1 ... Z 26); a letter series becomes a number series.
  • EJOTY: E 5, J 10, O 15, T 20, Y 25. Reverse position = 27 − position.
  • If a series wraps past Z, continue from A (Z + 1 = A) — subtract 26 from positions above 26.
  • Two-letter or three-part terms: treat each position as its own separate series.
  • Repeating-pattern blanks: guess the block length (3, 4 or 5) and check it against every given letter.
  • "nth to the right of mth from the left" = position m + n; "to the left" = m − n.
  • Semantic (logical) order: smallest to largest, earliest to latest, or cause to effect.

Step 1: letters become numbers

Every letter series is a number series in disguise. Write the positions under the letters and look at the gaps. Learn EJOTY (E 5, J 10, O 15, T 20, Y 25) so that any letter from C onwards is at most two steps from an anchor: R is T − 2 = 18; H is J − 2 = 8.

Falling gapZ, W, T, Q, ?N (−3 each)
Alternate lettersA, Z, B, Y, C, ?X (two interleaved series)
Wrap-aroundT, X, B, F, ?J (+4; X + 4 wraps to B)

Multi-letter and alphanumeric terms

For terms like AZ, CX, EV or KM5, IP8, split each term into its parts and solve each part separately: the first letters form one series, the second letters another and the numbers a third. Example: DP2, FN4, HL8, JJ16, ? — first letters +2 (D, F, H, J, L), second letters −2 (P, N, L, J, H), numbers ×2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32). Answer LH32.

For three-letter groups such as CEG, HJL, MOQ: check the gap inside each group (+2, +2 here) and the jump between the starting letters (C 3, H 8, M 13: +5). The next group starts at R(18): RTV.

Repeating-pattern blanks

Questions like "a_cab_abc_bc" hide a short block repeated. Guess the block length from the first few letters, write the full repeated string and read off the blanks. Example: "x_zxy_xyz_yz" — the block is xyz, so the string is xyz xyz xyz xyz and the blanks are y, z, x.

Wrong term

Find the rule that most terms follow, then test each term. In B, E, H, K, M, Q the rule +3 gives B, E, H, K, N, Q, so M is the wrong term. Exactly one term should fail.

Position questions

These test the alphabet itself. "The 5th letter to the left of the 18th letter from the left" is position 18 − 5 = 13, which is M. "The 4th letter to the right of the 9th letter from the right": 9th from right is 27 − 9 = 18 (R), and 4 to the right is 22 (V). Draw a quick arrow to avoid mixing left and right.

Semantic series (logical order of words)

Here words must be put in a meaningful sequence. The usual bases are size (atom, molecule, cell, tissue, organ), stages of growth (egg, larva, pupa, adult), time (second, minute, hour, day), process order (sowing, irrigating, harvesting, threshing) and hierarchy (village, district, state, country).
