Current Affairs Preparation: Method, Sources & Who Publishes What

A repeatable method for current affairs plus the layer that never expires: which body publishes which index or report, from the HDI to the Red List.

60-second revision

  • Human Development Index: UNDP, in the Human Development Report (since 1990).
  • Global Gender Gap Report: World Economic Forum. World Press Freedom Index: Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
  • Global Hunger Index: Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe — not FAO or WFP.
  • World Economic Outlook: IMF. World Development Report: World Bank. World Investment Report: UNCTAD.
  • IUCN keeps the Red List; UNEP publishes the Emissions Gap Report; WWF the Living Planet Report.
  • India State of Forest Report: Forest Survey of India, Dehradun, every two years.
  • Financial Stability Report: RBI, twice a year. SDG India Index: NITI Aayog.
  • The World Bank's Doing Business report was discontinued in 2021; its successor is Business Ready (B-READY).

Make current affairs finite

Current affairs is not a separate subject. Almost every news item that exam setters pick is a peg for a static fact: a summit points to the grouping's founding and headquarters, a new species listing points to the IUCN categories, a policy announcement points to the ministry and the constitutional provision behind it. If you learn the news item alone, you forget it in a month. If you attach it to its static base, it stays.

UPSC prelims leans on this news-plus-static link and on statement questions. SSC and RRB papers ask shorter, direct facts: who publishes a report, where an organisation is headquartered, which day is observed when. Prepare both layers, but spend most of your effort on the layer that does not expire.

A weekly method that works

  1. Read one national newspaper daily for 45–60 minutes, only for exam-relevant items: policy, economy, environment, science, international relations, and places and persons in the news.
  2. Note each item in one or two lines under a fixed subject heading (Polity, Economy, Environment, Science, International, Places, Persons), not only in date order.
  3. Next to every item, write its static hook: the Article or Act, the ministry or agency, the founding year, the location on the map.
  4. Every Sunday, revise the week's notes and mark new places on a blank map.
  5. Every month, merge four weeks into one compilation and test yourself on it; revise that compilation again after three and six months.

Science, environment and schemes in the news

For a science story, note the agency (ISRO, DRDO, DAE), the mission's objective and the concept behind it (orbit type, propulsion, isotope). For an environment story, note the species' IUCN category, the protected area and its state, and the convention involved: Ramsar for wetlands, CITES for wildlife trade, CBD for biodiversity. For a scheme, note the ministry, the target group and whether it is a Central Sector or a Centrally Sponsored scheme.
